During my time at Alaska Airlines, I supported content design by ensuring images and layouts were appropriate for sales initiatives and large events, working closely with UX writers and web producers. In addition, I developed an illustration and animation guide for Alaska’s kiosk display spaces and contributed to enhancing the UI across various projects.
I was tasked with enhancing the UI design for Alaska Airlines’ Live Activity feature. The initial goal was straightforward — make key travel information easy to read and accessible at a glance. I focused on improving visual hierarchy, typography, and spacing to ensure that essential details like gate changes, boarding times, and flight status were immediately clear to travelers using the feature.Here are some of the earlier concepts I explored during the design process. These iterations focused on balancing clarity and visual appeal, testing different ways to present real-time updates while maintaining a clean and modern aesthetic that aligned with Alaska Airlines’ brand.
Midway through the process, leadership challenged us to take the design further — to create something unique and out of the box, while still staying true to Alaska Airlines’ brand identity. This pushed me to explore more dynamic layouts.
Leadership responded positively to these unique concepts and encouraged me to collaborate with the UX team to better understand iOS Live Activity restrictions and technical feasibility. Through that collaboration, I gathered insights into the constraints within Apple’s framework. This helped me refine the design into a final version that not only aligned with Alaska Airlines’ brand and user needs but was also practical and feasible within the platform’s limitations.
I was responsible for creating a new illustration style for Alaska’s kiosk that feels more elevated than the previous version. The goal was to achieve a look that feels premium yet simple, easy to replicate and animate, and adaptable for both Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines. The design leverages color palettes from both brands to ensure a cohesive and flexible visual system, with a style that heavily relies on clean, expressive linework to make animation a key part of the storytelling.
